Curriculum Structure

The courses and credits are distributed as follows:

  1. Mathematics (14 hours). Required courses: Math 155A-B, 175, 198.
  2. Basic Science (24 hours). Required courses: Chemistry 102A-B, 104A-B, 219A-B, 220A-B; Physics 116A-B, 118A-B.
  3. Engineering Science (3 hours). Required course: ES 140A-C.
  4. Computer Science (3 hours). Required course: CS 103.
  5. Liberal Arts Core (18 hours). To be selected to fulfill the Liberal Arts Core requirements listed in the Degree Programs in Engineering.
  6. Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering (33 hours). Required courses: ChBE 161, 162, 180, 223, 225, 228W, 230, 231, 233W, 234W, 297.
  7. Chemical Engineering Focus Area. Students must complete one of the focus areas listed below.

Chemical Engineering (includes Minor in Chemistry) (31 hours) (Click here for a specimen curriculum)

  1. Required courses (15 hours): BSCI 110A or ChBE 220; Chem 230; ChBE 229W, 242, 283.
  2. Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering elective: 3 hours selected from ChBE course offerings.
  3. Technical electives (6 hours). From this list of approved technical electives:  BME (except 201, 241A-B), ChBE, CE, CS 201 or above, EECE, ENVE, ME, MSE, NANO, SC, ENGM 216, 254, 273, Astronomy (except 102, 115F, 203), Biological Sciences 110B or above (except 115F), Chemistry 202 or above, Earth and Environmental Sciences (except 108, 115F, 205), Mathematics 194 or above (except 196), Physics 200 or above (except 238), Neuroscience 201 to 274, Psychology 209, 236.
  4. Open electives (7 hours).

Biotechnology (31 hours)  (Click here for a specimen curriculum)

  1. Required courses (18 hours): BSCI 110A or ChBE 220; BSCI 201 or 220; ChBE 229W, 282, 283; ChBE 242 or 285.
  2. Technical electives: 6 hours selected from ChBE 285, 286, 287; BME 251, 252, 279, 280, 281.
  3. Open electives (7 hours).
  4. ChBE 285 can each be used to satisfy only one of 1) or 2).

Materials (includes Minor in Materials Science and Engineering) (31 hours)  (Click here for a specimen curriculum)

  1. Required courses (13 hours): ChBE 229W; ChBE 242 or 285; MSE 150, 150L, 250.
  2. Applied Materials electives:  6 hours selected from BME 101, 103, 274, 281; ChBE 284, 286, 287, 288.
  3. Science electives:  6 hours selected from Chem 203, 230, 235; Phys 225W, 229A, 254. One of BSCI 110A, ChBE 220, or Chem 240 may also be used to fulfill 3 hours of this requirement.
  4. Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering elective (3 hours). Selected from ChBE course offerings.  This requirement may be replaced by 3 hours of open electives if a ChBE course is taken to fulfill the Applied Materials elective.
  5. Open electives (3 hours).

Double Major with Chemistry (35 hours) (Click here for a specimen curriculum)

  1. Required courses (26 hours): Chem 203, 210, 212A, 230, 236, 295A-B; BSCI 110A or ChBE 220; BSCI 220; ChBE 242 or 285.
  2. Applied Chemistry electives: 6 hours selected from BME 281; ChBE 282, 283, 284, 286, 287, 288.
  3. Engineering Elective: 3 hours to be selected from BME (except 201, 241A-B, 249), ChBE, CE, CS 201 or above, EECE, ENVE, ME, MSE 250 or above, ENGM 216, 254, 273.

Double Major with Biomedical Engineering (requires 131 hours total) (Click here for a specimen curriculum)

  1. Required courses (40 hours): BioSci 110A, 111A; BME 101, 103, 251, 252, 255W, 271, 272, 273, 297; EECE 112, 213, 213L; Math 196.
  2. ChBE elective: ChBE 282 or 283.
  3. BME elective: 3 hours to be selected from BME courses at the 200-level and higher with the exception of 201, 210, 241A-B, 260, 301-305, and 391-394.
  4. Math 196 replaces Math 198 in the Mathematics requirement.
  5. BME 101, 272, 273, and 297 replace ChBE 180, 234W, and 297 in the ChBE Core requirement

Chemical Engineering Management (includes Minor in Engineering Management) (requires at least 126 hours total) (Click here for a specimen curriculum)

  1. Required courses (27 hours): BSCI 110A or ChBE 220; Chem 230; ChBE 229W, 242, 283; ENGM 221, 244, 273, 274.
  2. Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering elective: 3 hours selected from ChBE course offerings.
  3. Engineering Management elective:  3 hours selected from ENGM 216, 242, 251, 253, 254, 275; CE 290; ENVE 296.
  4. Technical elective (3 hours). From this list of approved technical electives:  BME (except 201, 241A-B), ChBE, CE, CS 201 or above, EECE, ENVE, ME, MSE, NANO, SC, ENGM 216, 254, Astronomy (except 102, 115F, 203), Biological Sciences 110B or above (except 115F), Chemistry 202 or above, Earth and Environmental Sciences (except 108, 115F, 205), Mathematics 194 or above (except 196), Physics 200 or above (except 238), Neuroscience 201 to 274, Psychology 209, 236. This requirement may be replaced by 1 hour of open elective if ENGM 216, 254, CE 290, or ENVE 296 is taken to fulfill the Engineering Management elective.
  5. ENGM 272 may be substituted for ENGM 273 in the required courses with the taking of an additional 3 hours of technical electives.
  6. ENGM 244 satisfies 3 credit hours of the Liberal Arts Core requirement.
  7. ENGM 216 and 254 can each be used to satisfy only one of 3) or 4).

Chemical and Environmental Engineering (includes Minors in Environmental Engineering and in Chemistry) (requires at least 126 hours total) (Click here for a specimen curriculum)

  1. Required courses (21 hours): BSCI 110A or ChBE 220; Chem 230; ChBE 229W, 242, 283; CE 226; ENVE 271.
  2. Environmental Engineering electives:  9 hours selected from CE 227, 259; ChBE 280; ENVE 252, 254, 260, 262, 264, 270, 272, 273, 274, 276, 277, 285, 296.
  3. Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering elective (3 hours). Selected from ChBE course offerings.  This requirement may be replaced by 1 hour of open elective if a ChBE course is taken to fulfill the Environmental Engineering elective.

Chemical and Nanoscience Engineering (includes Minors in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and in Chemistry) (31 hours) (Click here for a specimen curriculum)

  1. Required courses (24 hours): BSCI 110A or ChBE 220; Chem 230, 240; ChBE 229W, 242, 283; NANO 250; Phys 266.
  2. Nanotechnology Elective: 3 hours selected from BME 274, 281; ChBE 284, 285, 286, 287, 288; EECE 283, 284, 285, 288, 306; ME 320, 323, 365.
  3. Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering elective: 3 hours selected from ChBE course offerings. This requirement may be replaced by 3 hours of open electives if a ChBE course is taken to fulfill the Nanotechnology elective.
  4. Open elective (1 hour).

Scientific Computing (includes Minors in Scientific Computing and in Chemistry) (31 hours) (Click here for a specimen curriculum)

  1. Required courses (15 hours): BSCI 110A or ChBE 220; Chem 230; ChBE 229W, 242, 283; CS 204; SC 250.
  2. Scientific Computing electives: 6 hours selected from SC 291 or above, Astronomy 252, 253; BioSci 272; BME 279; ChBE 285; Math 226, 286, 287, 288; ME 263; Physics 223C, 257.
  3. Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering elective: 3 hours selected from ChBE course offerings. This requirement may be replaced by 3 hours of open electives if ChBE 285 is taken to fulfill the Scientific Computing elective.
  4. Open elective (1 hour).
