Medical Imaging
Biomedical imaging is a dynamic, evolving field of multi- and inter-disciplinary science that combines advances in engineering, computing, physics, chemistry, and other basic sciences. BME imaging faculty work across scales (cellular, preclinical and clinical) at the forefront of several imaging modalities (MRI, Ultrasound, Optical, and others), and develop novel imaging systems and techniques to impact research and clinical applications ranging from neuroimaging, to cancer imaging, to surgical guidance and opthalmology. The goal of this work is to increase the sensitivity, speed, resolution, clinical adoption and clinical utility of imaging, and to better understand the biological basis of imaging signals. Most imaging faculty are also part of the Vanderbilt University Institute of Imaging Science (VUIIS), which is a trans-institutional, interdisciplinary center within Vanderbilt, with strong links to various centers and departments across campus. BME faculty also lead the VU Biophotonics Center, a trans-institutional initiative in biophotonics research, technology development and education.
