Risk and Reliability Engineering & Management

The Civil Engineering Ph.D. program offers the option for focused multidisciplinary studies in Reliability and Risk Engineering and Management. 

Our focused study option was the first in the world to explore and develop integrated multidisciplinary computational and experimental approaches to assessing and managing risk and reliability. Initially founded as a part of the National Science Foundation IGERT program, Vanderbilt's pioneering approach is unique, and the techniques are broadly applicable across engineering and management disciplines.

The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program was initiated in 1997 by the National Science Foundation (NSF). The IGERT program was developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists, engineers, and educators with the interdisciplinary backgrounds, deep knowledge in chosen disciplines, and technical, professional, and personal skills to become in their own careers the leaders and creative agents for change.
