Research that impacts critical decisions around the world

Vanderbilt's focus on interrelationships between energy, water and the environment, emphasizing long-term sustainability, forms the basis for an internationally renowned research program on nuclear waste management, contaminated site remediation, and environmental leaching assessment.  Our research in these areas impacts national decisions in the United States and around the world.

Department faculty advise the President of the United States,...

...the Nuclear Regularly Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency and national laboratories.  Vanderbilt research faculty have led or participated in numerous studies by the National Academics of Engineering and Sciences in the area of nuclear waste management and remediation of the legacy from nuclear weapons production.  Our faculty members also consult with international agencies and foreign governments, including Russia and China, on ways to improve nuclear wastes.  Leaching assessment methodologies developed by departmental faculty in conjunction with colleagues at the Energy Research Centre of the Netherlands are being adopted by the Environmental Protection Agency and the European Union Directorate General for Environment.
