Vanderbilt University launched Destination Vanderbilt in 2020, a $100 million university excellence initiative to recruit new faculty. As part of the Destination Vanderbilt Hiring Initiative, the School of Engineering launched Destination Vanderbilt: Computer Science, a multi-year faculty recruitment and hiring process in Computer Science for 20 tenure-track positions at the Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor levels, but with preference at early-career appointments. In the first two years of the initiative, the CS department welcomed fourteen new distinguished faculty members.

Destination: Computer Science

  • Makes the Vanderbilt School of Engineering prominent in critical fields in CS
  • Establishes dominance in key areas at the intersection of CS and other fields
  • Expands the courses our undergraduate and graduate students expect as part of their education

CSgrowth3This multi-year faculty recruitment and hiring process is for 20+ tenure/tenure-track positions at the Assistant, Associate, and Full Professor levels in Computer Science. In 2021-22, we plan to hire at least six new faculty members with a focus on rising stars in their fields.

The faculty expansion targets four broad areas of Computer Science:

Enroll ChartOver the past decade, the Vanderbilt computer science program faculty have developed strong research programs, many of which are in collaboration with other Vanderbilt units in artificial intelligence and data science, cyber-physical systems, cybersecurity and resilience, medical image computing, and networked and embedded systems. The program provides a unique, collaborative, and interdisciplinary research environment.

Our faculty have established nationally and internationally recognized research institutes and centers with outstanding research staff and are renowned leaders in their respective fields, have extensive partnerships with leading universities, and they are extraordinary teachers and dedicated mentors. We are committed to our core values of education, research, and inclusive excellence.

Our hiring program builds on these strengths and aspires to transform the Vanderbilt computer science program into one of the leading academic programs nationally and beyond. Successful candidates are expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to develop and grow vigorous programs of externally funded research. Candidates will be considered in broadly defined areas of computer science that enhance our research strengths in areas that align with the investment and growth priorities of the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering.
