CS Preliminary Examination Procedures
The format and conduct of the preliminary exam is now governed by the concentration area in which the student wishes to obtain their degree, and varies from area to area.
Students should inform the Director of Graduate Studies (DGS) at the beginning of the semester in which they intend to take the preliminary exam (a notice is sent out remeinding students to do this). The DGS then assigns an external committee member to the student's preliminary exam committee and informs the faculty of the student's intention to take the exam and the assignment of the external member. At that point, the administration of the exam is conducted by the individual concentration areas and the student's adviser, who report the results back to the DGS. Procedures for the various areas are as follows:
