Experience the Digital Thread: A Simulation and Cloud-based Study

Brief Description of Project:
This project seeks one undergraduate student who will work on a forward-looking project that seeks to eliminate cost of prototyping in future digital manufacturing systems. The students will work with simulated CAD platforms and cloud/web platforms to model and simulate novel designs and to realize these designs for use ultimately by distributed set of 3D printers. In this project we will focus on simulations for our investigations but we will seek opportunities to transition the ideas to actual systems. Students will have the opportunity to sharpen their design skills, critical thinking and understand the full lifecycle of manufacturing systems.
CS 3251 or equivalent; Ability to learn a new technology and use it in problem solving; Knowledge of Web and Cloud programming an added plus;
Nature of Supervision:
Mentoring by the faculty member and graduate students, and weekly meetings with the professor and graduate students.
A Brief Research Plan (period is for 10 weeks):
Focus will be on learning the simulation tools involved and developing the cloud-based service. Write a report and prepare poster for presentation; Research will involve working with the graduate students and professor. There may be a possibility to work on one or more publications, and participating in demos of the technology. Weekly status update meetings through the 10-week period.
