Build Your Own Virtual Robot

Brief Description of Project:
This project will create a design environment, preferably for Virtual Reality, where students build and configure new robot vehicle designs from a variety of parts such as wheels, motors, sensors, and actuators. Students using the design environment will then be able to participate in various games and challenges using their robot designs and programs they create themselves.

With the importance of remote work and study steadily growing, a virtual robotic platform where students can program robots to execute tasks in a virtual 3D world is a great way to learn about programming and robotics. The educational programming interface for the robots is the block-based environment NetsBlox ( We have a prototype of such a platform that comes with a few predefined robots. The challenge of this project is simulating robots with enough physical accuracy and automatically generating a programming interface for the robots.

Desired Qualifications:
Useful skills would include familiarity with Unity3D, 3D modeling or art creation, C#, Computer Networking, Robotics
Nature of Supervision:
Work closely with graduate student
A Brief Research Plan (period is for 10 weeks):
Week 1: Introduction, getting acquainted with the project and team.
Weeks 2-5: System design.
Weeks 6-9: Build and test prototype.
Week 10: Preparing a final report on the research results.
