Pamela Wisniewski has been named a Flowers Family Chancellor’s Faculty Fellow in Engineering. She is an associate professor of computer science and an expert in the interplay between social media, privacy, and online safety for adolescents.
The award recognizes professors who have shown strong evidence of scientific accomplishment early in their careers and are likely to continue producing high-quality research in their respective fields.
“For more than a century, members of the Flowers family have attended and supported the Vanderbilt School of Engineering and Vanderbilt as a whole—from buildings to faculty chairs to scholarships,” said Philippe Fauchet, Bruce and Bridgitt Evans Dean of Engineering. “Thanks to the Flowers family, this fellowship creates opportunities for us to recognize the efforts of outstanding faculty in the early stages of their careers. I am grateful for the family’s thoughtful gift and continued support.”
Wisniewski’s research lies at the intersection of social computing and privacy. Her research has been featured by popular news media outlets, including ABC News, NPR, Psychology Today, and U.S. News and World Report. Her research has informed online safety recommendations made by the Federal Trade Commission to Congress, as well as internationally in efforts to end child exploitation online.
She has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed publications and won multiple best papers awards (top 1%) and best paper honorable mentions (top 5%) at ACM SIGCHI conferences. She is an ACM Senior Member and the first computer scientist to be selected as a William T. Grant Scholar for her work on reducing digital inequality of underprivileged youth.
Wisniewski leads the Socio-Technical Interaction Research Lab (STIR), which has a diverse portfolio of socio-technical research that spans multiple topics within the field of human-computer interaction.
