Robot obstacle course, fastest Geek contest highlight Engineers Week

Engineering students at Vanderbilt University will showcase their ingenuity through a series of challenging – but fun – competitions and events held during National Engineers Week February 16-20.

In addition to spotlighting the engineering profession, the competitions and activities are designed to interest students in engineering and scientific fields. Media and the public are invited.

Activities include:

Egg Drop Competition: Engineering students will have an hour to devise a container that will safely cushion its cargo egg from a three-story plunge. Cash prizes will be awarded.  12:30 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, Featheringill Atrium.

Robot Obstacle Course: Robots will be programmed by students to run an obstacle course. Cash prizes will be awarded.  11 a.m. – Noon Wednesday, Feb. 18, Featheringill Atrium. From noon to 1 p.m.,

Fastest Geek Competition: Students race to assemble a computer. The winners receives a free Dell notebook computer.  (Prelims 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, Featheringill Atrium) FINALS:  12:30 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, Feathingill Atrium.

National Engineers Week was first established in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers. It is traditionally held the week of Presidents Day because George Washington was a military engineer and a land surveyor.
