The Division of Sponsored Research received notification in September that the following grants in excess of $25,000 had been awarded to engineering faculty and graduate students:
Mark D. Abkowitz, Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $30,000 by the Department of Transportation for “CAIT 6: Managing the Impacts of Climate Change on freight – A Leadership Summit.”
Theodore A. Bapty, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $100,000 by the Department of Defense for “META Design Flow Definition and Implementation.” Gabor Karsai, Sandeep K. Neema and Janos Sztipanovits are co-principal investigators.
Xiaohong Bi, Biomedical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $50,000 by the Research Foundation/American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgery for “Development of Raman Spectral Markers to Discriminate Inflammatory Bowel Disease.” Anita Mahadevan-Jansen is co-principal investigator.
Christopher P. Buskirk, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $71,288 by the National Science Foundation for “CPS: VO: Virtual Organization for Cyber-Physical Research (VO-CyPhER).”
Peter T. Cummings, Chemical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $275,000 by the Department of Energy for “Fluid Interface Reactions, Structures and transport (FIRST) Center.” Dr. Cummings also received an award in the amount of $1,230,000 by the National Science Foundation for “Collaborative Research: CDI-Type II: Cyber-enabled Design of Functional Nanomaterials.” Akos Ledeczi is co-principal investigator.
Dennis G. Hall, Office of the Provost, has received an award in the amount of $569,000 by the National Science Foundation for “ARI-R2: The Renovation and Refurbishment of a Class 10000 Clean Room in the Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering Core Laboratories.” Anthony B. Hmelo is co-principal investigator.
Gabor Karsai, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $200,000 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for “Model Transformations and Verification.” Dr. Karsai also received an award in the amount of $55,055 by the National Science Foundation for “CPA Principal Investigators Meeting 2010.”
David Kosson, Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $1,540,690 by the Department of Energy for “Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation (CRESP III).” Charles W. Powers is CRESP co-principal investigator with Dr. Kosson.
Bennett A. Landman, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $146,959 by the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering for “Resource Development for the Java Image Science Toolkit.”
Haoxiang Luo, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $45,056 by the American Chemical Society/Petroleum Research Fund for “Three-dimensional Fragmentation of Core-annular Flow.”
William D. Merryman, Biomedical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $42,740 by the Brigham and Women’s Hospital for “Young Wook Chun Training Agreement.”
Sandeep K. Neema, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $149,000 by the Department of Defense for “Android Mobile Military Middleware Objects (AMMMO).” Theodore A. Bapty, Anirudda S. Gokhale and Douglas C. Schmidt are co-principal investigators. Dr. Neema also received an award from the Department of Defense in the amount of $100,000 for “Multi-model Language Suite for Cyber Physical Systems.” Theodore A. Alvin M. Strauss, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $117,544 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for “Development, Characterization and Validation of an Aerogel/RTV Based Cryogenic Propellant Tank.” Dr. Strauss also received an award from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration in the amount of $270,000 for “The Tennessee Space Grant Consortium.”
Janos Sztipanovits, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $370,989 by the University of Illinois-Chicago for “Strategic Health IT Advanced Research Projects on Security (SHARPS).” Akos Ledeczi is co-principal investigator. Dr. Sztipanovits also received an award in the amount of $2,019,300 by the National Science Foundation for “CPS: LARGE: Science of Integration for Cyber-Physical Systems.” Nicolas Koffenstette and Xenofon Koutsoukos are co-principal investigators.
