Daniel M. Fleetwood, Olin H. Landreth Professor of Engineering and chair of the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science department, and Ronald D. Schrimpf, Orrin Henry Ingram Professor of Engineering and director of the Institute for Space and Defense Electronics at Vanderbilt University, each have been named an Honored Professor of the Shanghai Institute for Microsystem and Information Technology, which is part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

The three-year appointments recognize Fleetwood’s and Schrimpf’s accomplishments in the areas of the radiation effects and reliability of microelectronics, and the cooperative interests of SIMIT, CAS and Vanderbilt University on fundamental, basic research in these areas. During their terms, Fleetwood and Schrimpf will visit SIMIT to deliver lectures and to define potential collaborative projects.
Fleetwood and Schrimpf are members of the Radiation Effects and Reliability Group at Vanderbilt, which is the largest of its type at any American university in terms of size and research grants. Their research focuses on the radiation response and long-term reliability of microelectronic devices and integrated circuits, modeling and simulation of semiconductor radiation effects, and defects in electronic devices and materials.

SIMIT, formerly known as Shanghai Institute of Metallurgy, was founded in 1928. Initially focused on metallurgy and ceramics, the institute shifted its research in the 1990s to information communication technology by pioneering the research and development of micro-satellites, wireless sensor networks and new generation mobile communications. Currently SIMIT has eight research laboratories or engineering centers, including two state key laboratories, three CAS key laboratories, and a recently established New Energy Technology Center.
