Nabil Simaan, associate professor of mechanical engineering, received second place for best conference paper at the 2012 SPIE Medical Imaging conference in San Diego, Calif. for his submission, “Enabling technologies for natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (N.O.T.E.S) using robotically guided elasticity imaging.”
The SPIE Medical Imaging meeting is the internationally recognized premier forum for reporting state-of-the-art research and development in medical imaging. Additional authors from the paper include N. Deshmukh, R.E. Goldman, T. Sen, P. Kazanzides, T.H. Taylor and E.M. Boctor.
Simaan has also co-authored two recent finalist entries for best conference papers entitled “Lessons Learned Using the Insertable Robotic Effector Platform (IREP) for Single Port Access Surgery,” at the 2012 Hamlyn Symposium on Medical Robotics and “Integration and Preliminary Evaluation of an Insertable Robotic Effectors Platform for Single Port Access Surgery,” at the 2012 IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation.
In addition, he received recognition for a best poster entry entitled “Preliminary Testing of a Transurethral Dexterous Robotic System for Bladder Resection,” presented at the 2011 Annual Engineering and Urology Society meeting.
