John Gass, former vice president of Chevron Corporation and former president of Chevron Gas and Midstream, has been appointed to the board of directors of Suncor Energy, Canada’s leading integrated energy company.
Suncor’s operations include oil sands development and upgrading, conventional and offshore oil and gas production, petroleum refining, and product marketing under the Petro-Canada brand. Suncor also is developing a growing renewable energy portfolio.
Gass graduated cum laude in 1974 from Vanderbilt with a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering. He also holds a master’s degree in civil engineering from Tulane University. He joined Chevron after graduation and spent 38 years with the company.
At Vanderbilt, Gass serves on the Board of Visitors for the School of Engineering and he is a member of the Advisory Board for the Vanderbilt Eye Institute.
In 2011 Gass was inducted into the School of Engineering’s Academy of Distinguished Alumni at a special dinner that was a major event in the school’s yearlong 125th celebration. He has been instrumental in the creation of the Chevron Human Energy Scholarship in Engineering at Vanderbilt, and he is a member of the school’s Lewis Society.
Gass retired from Chevron in 2012. A resident of Florida, he is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers and the Society of Petroleum Engineers. Gass also serves as a director of Southwestern Energy Co. and Weatherford International Ltd.
