Professor of Electrical Engineering, Emeritus, Charles V. (Chuck) Stephenson II, died July 25, 2021, in Asheville, North Carolina. He was 96.
Stephenson earned a bachelor’s, ’48, master’s, ’49, and a Ph.D., ’52, in physics at Vanderbilt. He worked at Sandia National Laboratory, doing research in the then-new field of solid-state physics.
After leaving Sandia, he was physics professor at Auburn University and was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Stephenson returned to Nashville in 1962 and joined the Vanderbilt engineering faculty. He rose to become chair of the Electrical Engineering Department. Stephenson and his wife Luellen were active volunteers at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital.
He is survived by his children: Dr. Charles Bruce Stephenson (Dr. Marija Norusis), Dr. Frances Luellen Lightsom, and Dr. Gregory Brian Stephenson (Dr. Carol Thompson); his grandchildren: Dr. Calvin Francis Hotchkiss and Samuel Stephenson Hotchkiss; and numerous nieces and nephews.
