Nashville native Robert H. Magruder, III, former professor of physics and chair of the Department of Chemistry and Physics at Belmont University, died August 25, 2024.
Magruder graduated from Vanderbilt University with a bachelor of science degree as a Phi Beta Kappa. He earned M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in mechanical engineering at Vanderbilt. Magruder began his career at Belmont University in 1984 as a professor of physics.
Magruder had several research collaborations and journal papers with Vanderbilt School of Engineering faculty. He was an adjunct research assistant professor of mechanical engineering from 1985-1998; an adjunct mechanical engineering professor from 1998-2001; and adjunct professor in electrical engineering and electrical and computer engineering from 2001-2022.
He is survived by his wife, three children and six grandchildren. The family suggests a donation to the Gary Sinise Foundation or other charities.
