Building on the strength of a newly released strategic plan, Vanderbilt’s School of Engineering has announced a bold initiative to hire 10 new tenure- and tenure-track faculty members over the next year, placing particular emphasis on energy expertise.

Krish Roy, the Bruce and Bridgitt Evans Dean and University Distinguished Professor, said the move reflects far-reaching ambitions to further elevate the School of Engineering’s research and educational enterprise.
“We are taking Vanderbilt’s inspiring motto — Dare to Grow — literally and committing in a significant way to bringing the very best and brightest faculty members to the School of Engineering,” Roy said. “Our strategic roadmap calls for us to address the societal and scientific grand challenges in critical areas that include improving human health, ensuring a sustainable planet, enhancing national security, and innovating beyond Earth. These new faculty members will be key to helping us and our students achieve meaningful success on these pressing topics.”
The new faculty hiring plan calls for the creation of an “energy cluster” that includes adding five new engineering faculty members in various disciplines that relate to issues of resilience, sustainability, and climate science. There will be an additional five faculty positions added that focus on cutting-edge technology such as artificial intelligence, signal processing, medical devices, and imaging.

Roy said the School of Engineering has built tremendous momentum in recent years, launching three new Vanderbilt Discovery centers and institutes that include the Vanderbilt Lab for Immersive AI Translation (VALIANT), the Vanderbilt Institute of National Security, and the Vanderbilt Center for Sustainability, Energy, and Climate (VSEC).
“This hiring initiative is just the beginning,” Roy said. “In the months and years ahead, you will continue to see the School of Engineering add programming, facility enhancements, and research capacity, all in the service of making Vanderbilt a premier destination for engineering and innovation leaders.”
