The Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) department conducts research in medical imaging, medical devices, robotics, and artificial intelligence (AI). Our faculty and students are dedicated to developing innovative technologies that improve how medical professionals diagnose, treat, and care for patients.
We design both software and hardware solutions for medical imaging systems to improve the quality of images and facilitate clinical evaluation and medical procedures. Our image processing research focuses on creating advanced algorithms that extracts and combines critical information from medical images and biological signals, leading to more accurate and timely diagnoses.
In the field of medical devices, we develop cutting-edge tools and instruments to enhance patient care. This ranges from wearable technology that monitors health in real-time to implantable sensors that provide continuous data.
Our research in medical robotics aims to improve the precision and effectiveness of surgical procedures and patient care. These robotic systems support complex medical tasks, making interventions safer, less invasive, and more efficient.
AI is a key driver of innovation in all these areas. We integrate AI to develop smarter systems, automate data analysis, personalize patient care, and enhance the capabilities of medical devices and robotics. By turning vast amounts of data into actionable insights, AI helps improve decision-making and patient outcomes.
The proximity of the Vanderbilt University Medical Center permits close collaborations between engineers and physicians. Many faculty working in these areas are affiliated with the Vanderbilt Institute for Surgery and Engineering (VISE), which is an interdisciplinary, trans-institutional structure designed to facilitate and foster interactions and exchanges.
