MS ECE (VLSI/Microelectronics)

Vanderbilt’s Microelectronics and VLSI Design area focuses on design, analyses, simulation, verification, and testings of modern integrated circuits by bridging semiconductor device physics to circuit behavior and system-level implementations. Coursework builds a rigorous foundation in the operation and modelling of semiconductor devices, followed by circuit design principles for high-speed and low-power applications, and advanced system-level architectures.

Students will learn to interpret how device-level constraints and physical effects influence circuit-level performance across analog and digital domains. Skill set for modern ASIC design is gained at the gate-level and the register-transfer-level for high-speed and/or low-power applications using latest software tools for industry-standard design flows. Advanced knowledge-base is developed through understanding the principles of embedded systems, dataflow processor design, multi-core architectures, graphics processor design, shared memory design, and related modern world applications.

Together, these topics will prepare the students in design, verification and testing challenges central to modern microelectronic systems for the most demanding jobs in the industry.  Students will be able to access additional focus areas including semiconductor materials and device characterization, reliability concepts, cyber-physical systems, and the effects of radiation on microelectronics reliability.
