The Cullen Trust for Higher Education Physician/Scientist Fellowship Program has awarded a one-year fellowship to first-year student
of Baylor College of Medicine.
Lin, who graduated summa cum laude from Vanderbilt University in 2006 with a bachelor of engineering, electrical engineering and mathematics, hopes to pursue the field of radiology as well as focus on MRI research for his graduate school studies.
The $1.115 million program, established in 2007, gives students a full stipend, benefits and tuition support. The program is funded for five years during which 14 M.D./Ph.D. fellows are selected from each BCM and the UT Health Science Center at Houston/UT M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.
Because of the collaboration between participating institutions, the fellowship offers numerous resources to the students, including the opportunity to do their Ph.D. research with faculty at any of the three institutions.
One of 42 NIH-funded training programs for medical scientists, the M.D./Ph.D. Program at BCM offers interdepartmental as well as interinstitutional graduate programs among seven institutions. The BCM M.D./Ph.D. program currently has 96 students and more than 160 graduates.
“”I chose to come to BCM because of the strong opportunities it provides for clinical training and research, and I’m excited that this grant will allow me to collaborate with others in the Texas Medical Center and expand my research,”” said Lin.
Before coming to BCM, Lin spent one year at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. doing MRI research, and another year working with AmeriCorps’ National Civilian Community Corps.
Hugh Roy Cullen and his wife Lillian created The Cullen Foundation in 1947. The Cullen Trust for Higher Education is one of three charitable trusts established by The Cullen Foundation in the 1970s to benefit education, the arts and health care in Texas, particularly in the greater Houston area.
