Former Redskins linebacker and ME grad to be honored as Vanderbilt legend at SEC event

Former standout linebacker Jonathan Goff will be saluted as Vanderbilt’s legend as part of Southeastern Conference Championship activities this weekend in Atlanta.

A product of St. John’s Preparatory School in Lynn, Mass., Goff was a two-time all-conference middle linebacker for Bobby Johnson-guided Vanderbilt squads. He earned four letters from 2004-07.

Former linebacker Jonathan Goff will be recognized at SEC Legends event this weekend in Atlanta.

Goff graduated in 2007 with a degree in mechanical engineering. He works as an applications engineer for Minnesota-based TURCK Inc.

Goff was honored earlier this month during the SEC Legends Reception and Dinner, then recognized in pregame ceremonies on the SEC Championships in the Georgia Dome.

As a senior co-captain in 2007, he led the Commodores and ranked third in the conference with 113 total tackles, earning First Team All-SEC honors from league coaches and second team recognition from Associated Press sportswriters. He concluded his career in remarkable fashion, posting at least 11 tackles in four of his final five appearances.

As a junior, Goff was named all-conference by the coaches after registering 67 solo tackles and 93 total tackles. He racked up at least 13 tackles in outings against nationally ranked opponents Michigan and Alabama.

Known as a quiet leader on the Commodore defense, Goff finished his career with 202 solo tackles and 307 total tackles in 45 games. He enjoyed 39 career starts.

Following his senior season, Goff played in the postseason East-West Shrine Bowl. He was selected in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Goff played four years with the Giants, becoming a starter at middle linebacker in 2010. He was a member of the Giants’ 2011 Super Bowl championship team.

Goff signed with the Washington Redskins in 2012. His pro career ended prematurely after two anterior cruciate ligament injuries to the same knee.
