President Barack Obama announced Feb. 11 his intent to nominate Allen Croff to a key administration post.
Croff, an appointee for membership on the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board, is an adjunct professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. He lectures on nuclear reactors, the nuclear fuel cycle, and waste management and consults on projects related to the nuclear fuel cycle.
Croff advises the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board on nuclear fuel cycle and radioactive waste management. He has been a member of the National Council on Radiation Protection for 14 years.
He currently is a consultant to Vanderbilt University projects concerning the use of mixed-oxide fuels in TVA reactors, the Department of Energy’s screening of advanced fuel cycle options, and the Electric Power Research Institute’s project to incorporation risk considerations into nuclear fuel cycle assessment models.
From 2010 to 2012, Croff was a senior technical adviser to the Blue Ribbon Commission on America’s Nuclear Future. He was vice chairman of the Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste and Materials at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission from 2004 to 2008, and he subsequently consulted with the NRC until 2010.
Prior to this, he worked in various capacities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory from 1974 to 2003. From 1998 to 2005, Croff was a member of the Department of Energy’s Nuclear Energy Research Advisory Committee.
He served as member of 10 National Academy of Sciences’ committees from 1991 to 2013, and was a member of the National Academies’ Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board from 2004 to 2009.
Croff received a B.S. in chemical engineering from Michigan State University, a nuclear engineer degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and an MBA from the University of Tennessee.
