Disney-themed Engineers Week promotes the importance of imagination

Stephanie Wang

Vanderbilt Engineers Week 2019 – February 18-22 – is spreading a little magic through more than a dozen activities during the annual five-day celebration of engineering education.

“We decided to go with a Disney theme because we think Disney really brings out our inner child and stresses the importance of imagination,” said Stephanie Wang, Engineering Council programming chair.

“The Disney theme really opened up some cool events we could offer that would tie in,” said Wang, a sophomore majoring in computer science. “Mostly, we’re hoping a Disney theme will provide a week of lightheartedness and nostalgia!”

Events will take place in Featheringill Hall where a photo booth with Disney props will be available all week. See schedule details below.

Main events include an “Exploration of  Virtual Reality” talk by a Disney illustrator along with Ole Molvig, assistant professor of history and faculty mentor of the Wond’ry’s Emergent Tech Lab, a Disney movie night and Disney trivia night with prizes.

The film “Dream Big: Engineering Our World” takes viewers on a journey from the world’s tallest building to a bridge higher than the clouds and a solar car race across Australia.  The film shows the ingenuity behind these marvels and it reveals the heart that drives engineers to create better lives for people worldwide.

“This year, we are also having a free “Attendance Lunch” for people who go to at least three events and collect three Disney stickers on an attendance card,” Wang said.

About 50 seniors will take the oath of the Order Of The Engineer and receive steel rings that symbolize their commitment to professional, ethical behavior.

The Engineering Council, comprised of representatives from campus engineering organizations, pulls the week together each year and several organizations sponsor events. IEEE chapter is hosting Destruct-a-Thon; Donuts and Post-Its, Women in Computing; Dream Big film, ASCE chapter; Hack New Rand Memes, VandyHacks; Command Line Capture the Flag, VandyFOSS; Liquid Nitrogen Ice Cream, AlChE chapter;  and Medical Kit Building, Engineering World Health.

Vanderbilt’s Engineers Week coincides with the event’s national observance. Established by the National Society of Professional Engineers in 1951, Engineers Week is dedicated to explaining and promoting the profession to ensure a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce.
