The School of Engineering’s graduate program is No. 39 in annual rankings by U.S. News. In a tie with Yale, the school is fifth among engineering schools of similar size appearing in the top 40. The School also was No. 39 in 2020 graduate program rankings.
The school ranks ahead of the University of Virginia and Washington University in St. Louis, and just behind Boston University. MIT is ranked No. 1.
Engineering specialty rankings are based solely on peer assessments by department heads in each specialty area. U.S. News conducted peer assessment surveys in fall 2019 for the specialty rankings.
In specialty programs, electrical engineering rose 4 points; biomedical engineering rose 3 points. Chemical engineering retained its spot at No. 36. School of Engineering specialties are ranked as follows:

- Chemical, 36 (tie)
- Civil, 43 (tie)
- Electrical, 46 (tie)
- Environmental, 51 (tie)
- Materials, 68 (tie)
- Mechanical, 40 (tie)
The statistical data for 2021 “Best Graduate Schools” rankings was collected in fall 2019 and early 2020. Rankings for the 200 engineering schools that responded with the necessary data were calculated based on expert opinions about program excellence and statistical indicators that measure the quality of a school’s faculty, research and students.
