High school students who want to explore engineering will find three courses of interest in the 2022 Summer Academy offered by the Vanderbilt Program for Talented Youth.

The course in Nanoscience and Nanoengineering is a two-week residential program, June 20-July 1, for rising 9th and 10th grade students.
The Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering (VINSE) is offering three full scholarships for at-need Tennessee students from underrepresented groups in science.
The class will expose students to the exciting world of nanoengineering. Students get an introduction into key nanoparticles and their properties while, stretching creative problem-solving skills to their limits.
Students can expect advanced lectures, labs, and extensive study with faculty, graduate students, and postdocs at VINSE and will get to spend significant time in one of Vanderbilt’s newest, biggest, and cleanest cleanrooms. These experiences will challenge students to see the world the way a nanoscientist does—how manipulating the smallest of particles might address some of the world’s biggest problems.
Bytes to Bedside: Translating Data Science Research from the Computer to the Clinic is a two-week class, July 10-22, for rising 11th and 12th grade students.
In this course, students will use publicly available datasets containing human health data, explore the capabilities and limitations of these datasets, and discuss ethical considerations for working with health data.
Using Python 3 and Jupyter Notebooks, students will gain hands-on experience with a data analysis pipeline, including data tidying and quality control, exploratory data analysis, and data visualization. They will apply a data analysis approach to answer a question about human health and present their discoveries to their peers.
A one-week class, Coding, Circuits and Creativity: An Introduction to Electrical Engineering, is offered June 20-25 to rising 7th and 8th grade students. No prior coding experience is required.
Students will develop skills in electrical engineering and programming, and be introduced to C and C++, powerful general-purpose programming languages. Throughout the course, students will learn to approach and solve problems like an engineer using the exciting conceptual frameworks of invention, discovery, and exploration.
Toward the end of the course, students will have the opportunity to design their own creative project using the Arduino Integrated Development Environment (IDE) to build an electric circuit that will light up, flicker, and make noises.
