Paul E. Laibinis has been named chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department, effective July 1. He succeeds Professor Kane Jennings, who served as department chair for nine years.
Laibinis, professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering, has served as associate chair and director of undergraduate studies in the department. He is a faculty member in the Vanderbilt Institute of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.
Laibinis is the recipient of a Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award, a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), a Vanderbilt University Ellen Gregg Ingalls Award for Excellence in Classroom Teaching, and the School of Engineering’s Edward J. White Award Engineering Faculty Award for Excellence in Service.
Laibinis earned bachelor’s degrees in chemistry and chemical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and a master’s degree in organic chemistry and a Ph.D. in chemistry at Harvard University.
Prior to joining the Vanderbilt engineering faculty as a full professor in 2005, Laibinis held academic posts at the California Institute of Technology, MIT, and Rice University.
