Vanderbilt University’s online master’s degree program in computer science is quickly making a name for itself — and drawing increased interest from a wide array of working professionals seeking to enhance their knowledge of digital technology.
Since the program began in 2019, it has attracted students from industries such as banking and finance, manufacturing, entertainment, education and engineering. In July 2022, it was ranked as the No. 1 online master’s program in computer science by Fortune magazine.
“I think the strong interest we’re seeing reflects the fact that deep knowledge of computer technology really sets people apart in the workplace today, almost regardless of their fields,” said Jules White, associate dean of strategic learning programs at the Vanderbilt University School of Engineering and associate professor of computer science and computer engineering.
“The other aspect that’s driving demand for this program is, frankly, Vanderbilt’s rigor,” White added. “We offer live classes with some of the best computer science instructors anywhere. Vanderbilt’s strong institutional reputation very much carries over into this program — and our students and their employers understand this.”
Total enrollment is between 110 and 120 and students can choose from an offering of 17 classes in topics such as cybersecurity, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, software engineering and data science. The 30-credit program can be completed between three to six semesters. The program also convenes periodic in-person events for students to network with peers and faculty members.
“One aspect of the program that really stands out is that students themselves often bring real-world examples and issues to discuss in class,” said Joanne Wang, assistant dean for professional and external programs at the School of Engineering. “It’s not uncommon to hear a student’s first-person perspective about well-known projects within Fortune 500 companies.”
Wang adds that while many students join the program with some technical background or experience, the online master’s degree allows them to extend and formalize that knowledge. “And what you really see are people—no matter where they are located—being able to advance their careers as a result,” she said.
