Robert Bodenheimer, professor of computer science, has won an inaugural Test of Time Award from IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications for a paper published in 1998. The ToT Award recognizes regular or special issue papers published by the magazine that have made profound and long-lasting impacts in bridging the theory and practice of computer graphics.
The initial ToT Award, selected in 2021, recognizes eight papers that cover the first three decades of IEEE CG&A, 1981–2010. Bodenheimer’s paper, “Verbs and Adverbs: Multidimensional Motion Interpolation,” was published in volume 18 of IEEE CG&A. Co-authors are Charles Rose and Michael F. Cohen.
The paper presents a technique for inserting between example motions derived from live motion capture or produced through traditional animation tools. These motions can be combined with smooth transitions between them, allowing an animated figure to have a substantial repertoire of expressive behaviors.
ToT selection criteria included objective measures, such as the citation counts, both total and yearly breakdown, and subjective considerations, including quality of the work, impact on application domains, and the ability to initiate new research trends.
