Constantinidis appointed associate director of the Vanderbilt Brain Institute

Christos Constantinidis, Stevenson Chair and Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Neuroscience, has been appointed associate director of the Vanderbilt Brain Institute (VBI).

The VBI is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge and driving groundbreaking discoveries in brain research through fostering research activities across the institution. Founded in 1999, VBI is comprised of nearly 500 faculty, staff, students and trainees from throughout Vanderbilt, representing five colleges, 24 departments and 27 centers and institutes.

“I am honored to join the exceptional leadership team at VBI. My primary focus will be on promoting interdisciplinary collaboration and research excellence to enhance our comprehension of the brain and improve treatments for conditions affecting cognitive function,” Constantinidis said.

Constantinidis also is a professor of psychology, ophthalmology and visual sciences, neurological surgery and radiology and radiological sciences.

Constantinidis’ research focuses on uncovering how neuronal activity in the brain impacts cognitive function. He is the principal investigator of National Institutes of Health grants studying cognition maturation in a nonhuman primate model, examining how functional properties of neurons change in the prefrontal cortex from adolescence through adulthood.

The Constantinidis Lab focuses on how neuronal activity in the cerebral cortex gives rise to cognitive functions using neurophysiological recordings and imaging, and computational analysis.
