MacOS X + VMware Fusion + Microsoft Windows

Follow these instructions to install VMware Fusion and Microsoft Windows on your Intel-based Macintosh computer running Mac OS X.

  1. Purchase and install on your Intel-based Macintosh computer a copy of VMware Fusion from http://www.vmware.com/ or from an alternative company.
    • Download the software to your computer over the network.
    • Double-click to open the *.dmg icon.
    • Double-click Install VMware Fusion.If the following warning appears,
      Install VMware Fusion" is an application which was downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?
      Click Open.

      If the following warning appears,
      This package contains a program that determines if the software can be installed. Are you sure you want to continue?"
      Click Continue.

    • A window entitled Install VMware Fusion appears.
    • On the Welcome to the VMware Fusion Installed screen, click Continue.
    • On the Software License Agreement screen, read through the agreement, print and/or save a copy if you wish, then click Continue.
    • A pop-up window appears requiring you to explicitly agree to the license terms. Click Agree.
    • On the Select a Destination screen, select the volume where you want to install VMware Fusion. This is usually your Macintosh HD. Then click Continue.
    • On the Standard Install on Macintosh HD screen, click Install.
    • If prompted, enter your password to authorize the software installation.
    • On the Serial Number screen, enter the serial number provided to you when you purchased the VMware Fusion software. Then, click Continue.
    • On the Installation completed successfully screen, click Close.
  2. Obtain a copy of Microsoft Windows 7 and Microsoft Office from the VUIT software store.
  3. Launch VMware Fusion on your Mac and follow these steps to load Microsoft Windows 7. Note that you can cancel the installation of Windows at any time.
    • In the Welcome window, click Create Virtual Machine. A New Virtual Machine Assistant window appears.
    • Insert your Microsoft Windows 7 CD or DVD into your CD/DVD drive.
    • On the Create New Virtual Machine screen, verify the Install this operating system radio button is selected and click Continue.
    • On the Windows Easy Install screen:
      • Verify that the Use Easy Install check box is selected
      • Verify that the Account Name field contents are accurate
      • Input and confirm a password for the Windows Administrator account.
      • Input the Windows Product Key from your Microsoft Windows 7 installation media.
      • Click Continue.
    • On the Sharing screen:
      • Select the appropriate radio button. If unsure, accept the default which is Share home folder.
      • You may wish to select the Share home folder with read and write access checkbox.
      • Click Continue.
    • On the Finish screen, verify the information is correct.
      • If needed, select Customize Settings and modify as appropriate.
      • Verify that the Always open this virtual machine when VMware Fusion starts box is checked.
      • Click Finish.
    • In the next pop-up window:
      • Input an appropriate name for this virtual machine. If unsure, accept the default.
      • Select the desired folder. If unsure, accept the default.
      • Click Save.
    • After the installation completes (typically less than 30 minutes), reboot Microsoft Windows.
      • As you reboot, if you see this message:
        Do not forget to install the VMware Tools package inside this virtual machine: wait until your guest operating system finishes booting, then choose Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools...and follow the instructions.
        Click OK.
    • If you see this message at the bottom of your VMware / Windows 7 window:
      VMware Tools is not installed. Choose the Virtual Machine > Install VMware Tools menu
      • Select the Virtual Machine menu.
      • Click 'Install VMware Tools.'
      • In the pop-up window, click Install.
    • In the AutoPlay window, click Run setup.exe.
      If prompted for permission, click Continue.
    • When the VMware Tools installation window appears, click Next.
    • On the Setup Type screen verify that Typical is selected, and click Next.
    • On the Ready to Install the Program screen, click Install.
    • When the installation is complete, click Finish.
    • If you see the following error message:
      Cannot connect virtual device ide1:0.
      No corresponding device is available on the host.
      Would you like an attempt to be made to connect
      this virtual device every time you power on the
      virtual machine?
      No Yes
      click, No.
    • When prompted to restart your system, click Yes.
    • After rebooting you may see the following message.
      VMware Fusion recommends running anti-virus software to ensure a secure and safe Windows experience on your Mac.
      Would you like to install a complimentary 12-month subscription to McAfee VirusScan Plus now?

      If so, click the Don't Show Again button, then click Cancel.
  4. Login to your Windows account to continue configuring your computer.
    • Install anti-virus and anti-spyware software.
    • Update your Microsoft Windows environment.
      • Select Start.
      • Select All Programs.
      • Select Windows Update
        • Initialization Steps
          • On the Windows Update page, set the Automatic Updates to occur during a time that you anticipate your VMware and Microsoft Windows environment will be active.
          • Select Change settings in the left column.
          • Click Turn on now. If prompted for permission, click Continue.
          • Click Get updates for more options.
          • On the Microsoft Update webpage, read and agree to the terms of use.
          • Click the I accept the Terms of Use checkbox.
          • Click Install.
          • If prompted for permission, click Continue.
          • When you return to the previous Windows Update screen, click Install now.
          • If prompted for permission, click Continue.
        • Updating Windows
          • Eventually, updates will be identified. When prompted to download and install updates for your computer, click Install updates.
          • If prompted to accept license terms, click the I accept the license terms radio button, then click Finish.
          • If prompted for permission, click Continue.
          • If prompted, click Restart now to reboot the OS.
        • Repeat the Update your Microsoft Windows environment section until there are no more updates to apply.
    • Launch VMware Fusion on your Mac and follow these steps to load Microsoft Office.
      Note that you can cancel the installation of Office at any time.
      • In the lower right corner of the VMware window, click the icon that displays Configure this virtual machine's "CD/DVD" device when you hover over it. Click Connect CD/DVD.
      • Load your Microsoft Office DVD/CD into the DVD/CD drive.
      • If an AutoPlay window appears, click Run SETUP.EXE.
      • If prompted for permission, click Continue.
      • If an AutoPlay window does not appear, while holding down the Command key, click the Start menu, and select Explore to open Windows Explorer.
      • Scroll down in the left column and select your CD or DVD drive.
      • Double-click setup.
      • If prompted for permission, click Continue.
      • When prompted, enter your Microsoft Office product key, which is printed on your Office CD/DVD case, then click Continue.
      • Read the Microsoft Software License Terms agreement, click the I accept the terms of this agreement check box. Then click Continue.
      • Click Install Now.
      • Possibly click 'Go to Office Online' (if you know what you're doing)
      • Otherwise click Close.
      • Eject Microsoft Office CD/DVD from your DVD/CD drive.
      • If you opened Windows Explorer, close it.
      • After launching IE, when prompted to turn on/off Phishing Filter, click the Turn on radio button and click OK.
    • Update your Microsoft Office environment.
      • Select Start.
      • Select All Programs.
      • Select Windows Update.
      • When prompted, click Install updates.
      • If prompted, click Restart Now.
      • Repeat the Update Your Microsoft Office environment section until there are no more updates to apply.
