Sponsored research: Grants awarded to engineering faculty in August

The Division of Sponsored Research received notification in August that the following grants in excess of $25,000 had been awarded to School of Engineering faculty:

Theodore A. Bapty, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $318,834 by the Department of Defense for “Future Combat Systems:  System Development and Demonstration Phase.” Sandeep Neema, Jason M. Scott and Janos Sztipanovits, EECS, are co-principal investigators.

Eric Barth, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $1,435,838 by the Belenos Energy, Incorporated for “The Controlled Free-Piston Stirling Engine for Solar Energy Applications.” Greg Walker, ME,  is co-principal investigator.

Bharat Bhuva, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $525,000 by the Cisco Systems Foundation for “Soft Error Analysis of Designs at 28 nm Platform (28nm).” Robert Reed, EECS, is co-principal investigator.

Laurie Cutting, Special Education, has received an award in the amount of $544,371 by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development for “Cognitive and Neural Processes in Reading Comprehension.”  Adam Anderson, Biomedical Engineering, is co-principal investigator.

Jim L. Davidson, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award by the Department of Defense for “Super High Density High Voltage Capacitors.”

Craig L. Duvall, Biomedical Engineering, has received an award by the Department of Defense in the amount of $246,603 for “Surface Functionalized Nanoparticles for Proximity Activated Targeting of Dual-mode Therapy for Multidrug Resistant Breast Cancer and Breast Cancer Metastases.”

Todd D. Giorgio, Biomedical Engineering, has received an award by the Department of Defense in the amount of $582,332 for “Surface Functionalized Nanoparticles for Proximity Activated Targeting of Dual-mode Therapy for Multidrug Resistant Breast Cancer Metastases.”  Dr. Giorgio also received an award in the amount of $110,553 from the Department of Defense for “Nanomaterials for Modulation of Macrophage Characteristics and Immune Response to Metastic Breast Cancer.”

Aniruddha Gokhale, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $66,000 by the National Science Foundation for “RAPID:  Collaborative Research:  Cloud Environmental Analysis and Relief.”

George Hornberger, Vanderbilt Institute for Energy and the Environment, has received an award in the amount of $450,000 by the National Science Foundation for “Grasses and Gases:  Modeling Human Dynamics of Lawn Fertilization and Resultant Nitrous Oxide Emissions.”  Kimberly Bess, James Fraser and Michael Paul Vandenbergh are co-principal investigators.  Dr. Hornberger also received an award in the amount of $116,552 by the National Science Foundation for “Hydrologic Flow Paths of Terrestrial DOC that Enters Streams.”

David Kosson, Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $1,746,401 by the Department of Energy for “Consortium for Risk Evaluation with Stakeholder Participation (CRESP III).” Charles W. Powers, Mark D. Abkowitz and James H. Clarke are co-principal investigators.  Dr. Kosson also received an award in the amount of $75,000 from Arcadis, Incorporated for “Development Document Package for Inclusion in SW-846 for USEPA.”  Andrew C. Garrabrants is co-principal investigator.  Arcadis, Incorporated also awarded Dr. Kosson $100,000 for “Technical Services – Leaching – Data Reduction and Reporting.”  Florence Sanchez is co-principal investigator.

Haoxiang Luo, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $400,000 by the National Science Foundation for “CAREER:  Flapping in the Wind-passive Mechanisms in Insect Wings for Flight Stabilization.”

Sankaran Mahadevan, Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $52,936 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for “Bayesian Approach for Uncertainty Management in Damage Prognosis.”  Dr. Mahadevan also received an award in the amount of $114,913 from the Department of Energy for “Uncertainty Quantification in Multi-scale, Multi-physics MEMS Simulation.”

Anita Mahadevan-Jansen, Biomedical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $261,534 by the National Cancer Institute for “Diagnosis of Cervical Precancers Using Raman Spectroscopy.”

Sandeep Neema, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $49,868 by the Department of Defense for “Data Synchronization for Android Mobile Military Middleware Object.”  Theodore A. Bapty, EECS, is co-principal investigator.

Peter N. Pintauro, Chemical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $229,751 by the National Science Foundation for “Nanofiber Composite Ion-Exchange and Bipolar Membranes.”

Florence Sanchez, Civil and Environmental Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $50,000 by Arcadis, Incorporated for “Technical Support-Lab Analysis.”  David Kosson, CEE, is co-principal investigator.

Barry Templeton, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received two awards by the Department of Defense in the amounts of $76,497 and $113,721 for “MINUTEMAN Modeling.”  Ronald D. Schrimpf, EECS, is co-principal investigator.

Greg Walker, Mechanical Engineering, has received an award in the amount of $146,549 by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency for “Specificity and Response to the Photoluminescence of Irradiated Nanophosphors.”  Bridget Rogers, Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, is co-principal investigator.

Art Witulski, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has received an award in the amount of $48,722 by SEAKR Engineering, Incorporated for “SEAKR.”
