Data Science Institute hosts ‘Visual Trumpery’ seminar and workshop

The Vanderbilt Data Science Institute will host Alberto Cairo, Knight Chair in Visual Journalism at the University of Miami, for a seminar on Thursday, Sept. 20, and a workshop on Friday, Sept. 21, in Wilson Hall, Room 103.

Cairo is bringing his “Visual Trumpery” national tour to Vanderbilt to discuss misleading graphics and the quality of any data visualization. He is the author of The Functional Art and The Truthful Art.

The Sept. 20 seminar is scheduled from 4 to 5 p.m. and is open to the Vanderbilt community. Cairo will then host a small workshop on Sept. 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This workshop will be limited to 40 participants.

The institute is co-directed by Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy Andreas Berlind and Douglas Schmidt, associate provost for research development and technologies and Cornelius Vanderbilt Professor of Engineering.
