Vanderbilt Engineering is 36th in 2022 ‘U.S. News’ rankings

The Vanderbilt School of Engineering is No. 36 in the 2022 U.S. News and World Report’s Best Colleges rankings released today. The school rose one spot from 2021 and is tied with Arizona State University, Brown University, North Carolina State, University of Notre Dame and the University of Virginia. MIT is ranked No. 1.

In the spring and summer of 2021, U.S. News surveyed deans and faculty members of 210 undergraduate engineering programs accredited by ABET, the engineering accrediting body, where the highest engineering degree offered is a doctorate. Rankings are based solely on the surveys and the group where the terminal degree is a doctorate had a 56.9% response rate.

U.S. News also asked respondents for nominations of up to 15 of the best engineering programs in 12 specialty engineering areas. Schools that received the most mentions in each specialty are ranked in descending order by number of mentions.

In specialty engineering areas, three Vanderbilt programs were ranked:

  • Computer engineering ranked No. 25; tied with Pennsylvania State University.
  • Biomedical engineering is ranked No. 27; tied with Pennsylvania State University.
  • Computer science is No. 46; tied with Northeastern University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, University of New York-Stony Brook, and Texas A&M.

Vanderbilt University has retained its No. 14 spot in the latest rankings. The university ranked eighth on the publication’s list of Best Value Schools, up one spot from last year. “Best Value” designates universities that offer the best value for students receiving need-based financial aid.

The 2022 Best Colleges rankings evaluate colleges and universities on 17 measures of academic quality, including retention and graduation rates, class size, the strength of the faculty, per-student spending, peer universities’ assessments, and the average federal loan debt of graduates.
