School of Engineering Dean, Emeritus, Paul Harrawood, 93, died Oct. 3, 2021, in Lexington, Virginia.
Harrawood joined the Vanderbilt engineering faculty as an associate professor of civil engineering in 1967. He served as director of the engineering science division from 1967 to 1971, and he served as acting dean in 1970-1971. He was dean of the School of Engineering from 1979 to 1986. He retired in 1997 as Civil Engineering Professor, Emeritus, and Dean, Emeritus.
Before joining the Vanderbilt faculty, Harrawood was a civil engineering instructor at the University of Missouri-Rolla, 1954-1956, and an assistant professor at Duke University, 1956-1967.
Harrawood earned a bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil engineering at the University of Missouri-Rolla in 1951 and 1956, respectively. He earned a doctorate in 1967 at North Carolina State University.
Prior to his academic career, Harrawood was a test engineer McDonnell Aircraft Corporation and a construction management engineer with the United States Army Corps of Engineers.
Harrawood served with United States Naval Reserve, 1951-1954. He was a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Society of American Military Engineers, the American Society Engineering Education, the American Association Higher Education, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, as well as Sigma Xi, Tau Beta Pi, Chi Epsilon.
Harrawood was proud of his naval service during the Korean War aboard the USS Kleinsmith, and he loved teaching and fought to uphold regional and national standards for scholar-athletes.
He was preceded in death by his wife, June Harris Harrawood, and is survived by his daughter, LauraAnne Harrawood, a brother, sister, nieces and nephews.
A private graveside service was conducted on Oct. 8. Memorial contributions can be made to Rockbridge Area Hospice in Virginia.
