School of Engineering offers three new graduate certificate programs

The School of Engineering is offering three new certificate programs available to enrolled Vanderbilt graduate students.

Two graduate certificate programs – Mobile Cloud Computing and Surgery and Interventional Engineering – will be offered starting in the fall semester 2016. A graduate certificate program in Technology Entrepreneurship will be offered starting in summer 2017. Each program requires 12 credit hours of study and consists of core courses and designated elective courses.

“The inception of graduate certificate programs within the School of Engineering strengthens our effort to enhance the skills and technical competencies of our Vanderbilt graduate students, and it represents a growing collaborative effort among the School of Engineering, the School of Medicine, the Owen Graduate School of Business, and the Peabody College of Education and Human Development,” said E. Duco Jansen, associate dean for graduate education.

“Our certificate programs are designed to provide students with specialized knowledge in an area of professional importance or personal interest,” Jansen said. “While the certificate programs are valuable for the professional development of all graduate students, having the certificates is a first step towards establishing several new interdisciplinary professional Master’s programs in areas where we have particular strengths and critical mass. We hope to put those in place in the coming years.”

Students will receive a credential, typically for use on a resume or curriculum vitae, to document study in a particular sub-field during the course of their graduate degree program at Vanderbilt. A notation of completion will appear on the student’s official university transcript.

The certificate program in Mobile Cloud Computing is housed in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. The department is a recognized leader in mobile cloud computing due to its decades of highly-regarded re­search on distributed real-time and embedded middleware and recent success developing and delivering massive open online courses (MOOCs) as part of the Coursera Mobile Cloud Computing with Android (MoCCA) Specialization.

The certificate program in Surgical and Interventional Engineering capitalizes on faculty expertise in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering and computer science, and mechanical engineering departments as well as more than a dozen primary collaborators in the School of Medicine, through the Vanderbilt Institute in Surgery and Engineering. The certificate program will provide both an interdisciplinary technical foundation and clinical exposure to students interested in interventional procedures and processes.

The certificate program in Technology Entrepreneurship will focus on the transition of new technologies and processes from the lab to a technology venture. Practices of business creation, intellectual property protection, and academic licensing will be presented from a team of faculty from the School of Engineering, Owen Graduate School of Business, and the Peabody College of Education and Human Development.

The Mobile Cloud Computing certificate contact is Doug Schmidt, professor of computer science. The Surgical and Interventional Engineering certificate contact is Robert Webster, associate professor of mechanical engineering and VISE Education Director. Christopher Rowe, director of the Division of General Engineering and associate professor of the practice of engineering management, is the contact for Technology Entrepreneurship.
