The Bachelor of Engineering degree program in biomedical engineering is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, www.abet.org, under the General Criteria and the Program Criteria for Bioengineering and Biomedical and Similarly Named Engineering Programs. Program Educational Objectives

Program Educational Objectives are broad statements that describe what graduates are expected to
attain within a few years after graduation. The undergraduate Program Objectives of the Biomedical Engineering program are as follows.

Within a few years of graduation, graduates will

  1. Continue to expand their knowledge, for example by pursuing advanced degrees at top-tier institutions in engineering, medicine, business, or law.
  2. Contribute to society while upholding the highest professional and ethical standards.
  3. Become leaders and succeed in their careers as engineers, scientists, health professionals, entrepreneurs, and other professionals.

Student Outcomes

Student Outcomes are statements that describe what students are expected to know and be able to do by the time of graduation. A set of 7 suggested outcomes are provided by ABET and these have been adopted by the program faculty of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. These outcomes are as follows:

Graduates of the biomedical engineering program will have:

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.       
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors. 
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.     
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.            
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives.   
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions.        
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Student Enrollment and Graduation Rates

The official enrollment is determined each semester on the 22nd day of class.

As of Fall 2023, 221 undergraduate students were enrolled in the biomedical engineering program with an additional three and 17 BME students in the double major programs with chemical engineering and electrical and computer engineering, respectively.

The School of Engineering conferred 53 Bachelor of Engineering degrees in biomedical engineering in the 2022/2023 academic year. Statistics concerning graduation rates and job placement are maintained by the School of Engineering and can be viewed at:
